plant eating metals
Researchers from the Philippines have made a remarkable discovery. They have found on an island in the country a plant that can consume large amounts of metal without having to suffer because of it. The species in question is called Rinor niccolifera. It can be used to clean polluted soil and to gather metal commercially viable. It is one of the 450 known plant as  hiperacumulators.

Scientists know 300,000 vascular plants that can absorb significant amounts of metals through their roots. Professor Edwino Fernando (University of the Philippines), who led the study, said Rinor niccolifera has the ability to absorb an amount of 1,000 times higher compared to the nickel that can be taken from any other plant.

"The new species was discovered in the western part of the island of Luzon in the Philippines, an area known for its rich soil heavy metals," reads the press release given by Edwino Fernando, Marilyn Quimado and their research team. The new plant can remove a huge amount of soil metals in polluted ecosystems. It may be used in the mining industry. Because of the ability to absorb a lot nickel species that can be harvested for the extraction of metal absorbed by it.
